Background: The National Liberation Front (NLF) — Viet Cong
The National Liberation Front (NLF), often known as the Viet Cong, was founded in 1960, as a powerful anti-imperialist and nationalist movement in South Vietnam. Composed of communists, nationalists, religious groups, and ordinary people united under one banner, the NLF played a central role in the Vietnamese struggle for reunification. The aim was to defeat the US backed South Vietnamese government and achieve national liberation.
Driven by its vision of Vietnamese national liberation, the NLF built a grassroots political network, organizing local communities, political committees, and shadow governments while waging its military campaign. Militarily, the Viet Cong used ingenious guerrilla tactics: ambushes, sabotage, tunnel systems, and booby traps, leveraging superior local knowledge of the terrain.
One of their defining moments was the Tet Offensive of 1968, which, despite heavy costs, became a strategic turning point. The offensive galvanized international opinion and challenged perceptions about the solidity of U.S. and South Vietnamese control.
Beyond its military impact, the NLF symbolized the resilience and determination of the Vietnamese people in their fight against foreign intervention. Its legacy today is celebrated in Vietnam as a key chapter in the country’s journey to reunification.
