The design is inspired by a 1983 Chinese environmental poster encouraging co-operation between the people and government to heal the natural landscape and reverse deforestation.

Background
By the early 1980s, decades of industrialization, war, and agricultural expansion had left China facing an ecological crisis. Severe deforestation had stripped the hillsides, leading to massive topsoil erosion, dust storms, and catastrophic annual flooding along the Yangtze and Yellow rivers.
In response, the Chinese government enacted the 1981 Compulsory Tree Planting Law: every able-bodied citizen over the age of 11 must plant three to five trees every single year. Environmentalism was reframed as a patriotic duty to heal the motherland. To mobilize hundreds of millions of citizens, the government commissioned prominent artists to create inspiring visual campaigns.
This design is based on a 1983 poster by Zhou Ruizhuang (周瑞庄). Unlike aggressive, military style political artwork, his design was full of optimism, pastoral beauty, and community spirit. It showed regular citizens shoulder to shoulder, marching into the hills with saplings and shovels beneath a flock of cranes, the historical Chinese symbol of peace, longevity, and a thriving ecosystem.
