COLONIALISM IS DOOMED Jacket

A 1 of 1, hand made denim & corduroy jacket in off-white & teal blue, with Russian cyrillic text across the back which says "КОЛОНИАЛИЗМ ОБРЕЧЕН" (Colonialism is Doomed). 

The design is inspired by a 1961 Soviet propaganda poster celebrating the liberation of Goa by Indian forces from the Portuguese Empire.

Background

By 1961, the Portuguese Empire had maintained colonial rule over Goa, Daman, and Diu on the western coast of India for 451 years. After gaining Independence from the British Empire in the 1940s, the Indian government tried to negotiate peaceful transfer of these territories from Portugal, but Portuguese dictator Salazar refused.

After years of failed diplomacy and conflict with local resistance groups, India launched an operation to take the territory back by force. The Portuguese colonial governor surrendered after a couple of days.

While many western countries were against this military action by India, the USSR was fully supportive and used it's UN veto to block a resolution which would demand India to withdraw, promoting India's sovereign right to liberate it's land.

The USSR used the event to promote it's own image as an ally to newly independent nations seeking self determination.

The poster shows the text "Колониализму повсюду обречен!" (Colonialism is doomed everywhere!) and uses a bold color palette to bring attention to it's message.
