After gaining Independence from the British Empire in the 1940s, the Indian government tried to negotiate peaceful transfer of these territories from Portugal, but Portuguese dictator Salazar refused.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp data-end=\"1408\" data-start=\"1111\"\u003eAfter years of failed diplomacy and conflict with local resistance groups, India launched an operation to take the territory back by force.
